SAN FRANCISCO, CA, (NAMC) – The French maker of communications equipment Alcatel (NYSE:
ALA) has come to terms with Lucent Technologies (NYSE:
LU) and will acquire the Murray Hill, New Jersey company for a price tag of $13.45 billion.
This past week the word was out that the two companies were in talks and as opposed to the last time that they sat at the table, this time they have moved swiftly to strike a deal.
Lucent’s Pat Russo will be at the head of the newly combined company, which has yet to be named. Mike Quigley with serve as the Chief Operating Officer as
Jean-Pascal Beaufret will serve as the Chief Financial Officer. The company will be headquartered in France.
The combined company will put them in the number two spot, side by side with Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:
CSCO).
Now one note that we have to touch on is the fact that Lucent was once the former Bell Labs Company that was spun out of AT&T (NYSE:
T) back in 1996. The reason that this is important is that Bell Labs created various forms of technology that the United States Government still uses, so this bit of history may come into play. The United States put the brakes on the Dubai Ports deal recently due to national security issues but at the same time executed a purchase agreement for 16,000 laptops from Lenovo, a former IBM (NYSE:
IBM) company but now partially owned by the Chinese Government, which they didn’t raise an eyebrow about. The point is that though both Alcatel and Lucent have agreed to the acquisition, the U.S. Government has yet to voice their opinion.
